Islanders vs Marathon6.jpg_____

*Islandersfc.net published a very interesting note regarding the officiating of the USL. Essentially what Eduardo Cantore says can be summed up as:

-The USL favors physical play vs talented ball movement, even with FIFA regulations clearly point in the opposite direction.

-There continues to be very inexplicable but consistent refereeing against the Islanders beyond what could be normally attributed to different referees, etc. It has left many fans and commentators wondering whether there is a desire by the league to hamper the Islanders’ performance on the pitch (particularly considering the controversial decision last year as to where the USL Final would be played).

You can read the note (Spanish) here: Islandersfc.net

_____

*Primera Hora published a note on Andres Cabrero’s performance in the match against Rochester last week. As we mentioned previously, Cabrero had an impressive performance as a starter. With last year’s league MVP, Jonathan Steele, still nursing an injury – Cabrero might be a regular in the starting lineup for a while. Even when Steele is back in full match form, we might see these two players competing for a spot in the starting 11. This isn’t only good for the young Puerto Rican star, but overall I think it’s a very good example of the extraordinary depth of the team.

_____

*The USL announced their ‘team of the week‘ honors on Tuesday. The week 3 honors included Islanders captain Noah Delgado for his effort in the 0-0 draw with Rochester last week. The players of the week honor went to Austin Aztex player Eddie Johnson with his 2 goals and 1 assist in the 3-0 win over Cleveland last Saturday.

_____

*The USL published a note on the Islanders’ and Whitecaps’ road to the Concacaf Champions League for 2009-2010. The Islanders received a bye to the semi-final round to be played May 15 in Trinidad. The draw for the semi-finals should take place early next week. The Whitecaps face the Toronto FC of the MLS next Wednesday May 6 for their first match of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. The winner of this championship will represent Canada in the next Concacaf Champions League. Last year’s honors went to the Montreal Impact.

_____

*Last but not least, MatchFitUSA continues with their USL-1 project. MFUSA is looking for a team to adopt as its own in the USL-1. The project is currently in its ‘semi-finals’ as you can see in the note. As Islanders supporters, please drop by the website and comment in favor of the Islanders! Time to show your colors.

Help get the Islanders and the USL-1 in upcoming EA Sports FIFA games!

April 26, 2009

ps3-usl_b

In a recent live blog by MatchFitUSA, several participants began discussing the lack of a USL-1 presence on EA Sports FIFA games such as FIFA 09. All it took was a small comment by Jason from MFUSA to get the ball rolling: “why don’t you start a petition?”

So we did, now we have an online petition to be sent to Electronic Arts with the purpose of including the USL-1 league in future games of the EA Sports FIFA franchise. And now MFUSA has blogged about it: here, and we have several people talking about it on Twitter.

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to play a match between the Puerto Rico Islanders and the English side Arsenal? Or maybe Montreal Impact vs Argentinian Boca Juniors? Well if we get this petition going, that could soon be a reality in your Xbox 360 or other videogame console.

If you’d like to help make this into reality, please sign the petition below:

Petition

Also, remember to forward it to your friends and post it on facebook, twitter, and wherever else you think it could garner more support.

We think having the USL-1 featured in the FIFA games would not only be great for us fans to have something else to do in between games, but it would also help increase the exposure and popularity of our league and our clubs at home and abroad – thus creating more visibility and even respect for our teams.

EA Sports: We want the USL-1 in FIFA games now! http://www.petitiononline.com/USL/petition.html

Want to help promote this? Link to the petition on your blog/website/etc and see below for more great pictures that serve as great promotion for this effort: (photos provided by user LordLoxely from the HIAPR.org forum)

Two firsts of the season

April 25, 2009

USL-1 action on Saturday night:

*Austin Aztex beat the visiting Cleveland City Stars 3-0, making it the first win in club history.

*Portland Timbers fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-nil, it was the Whitecaps home opener and their first win of the season. Also, it was Portland’s season opener – the Portland supporter group, Timbers Army, was in full force visiting Swangard Stadium.

*The Islanders will be playing in the Caribbean Football Union club championship in May. The top 3 team earn berths into the 2009-2010 Concacaf Champions League. So far 3 of the semi-finalist have been defined: PR Islanders, W Connection (Trinidad), and San Juan Jabloteh (Trinidad). For an update on the quarter-finals you can visit: TheOffside

*A clarification note: the friendly we reported on earlier on Saturday against Guyanabo Fluminense was actually played for only 45 minutes. Heavy rain prevented the game from continuing. So yep, those 6 goals were all in what would have been the first half. Fabrice Noel scored 3 goals, Kendall Jagdeosingh scored 2, and Martin Nuñez scored 1.

More on the Puerto Rico – Rochester game:

Andres Cabrero

15337134311Something we forgot to mention in our post-match report earlier today was Andres Cabrero’s great permormance last night. Cabrero, just 20 years old, is a Puerto Rico National Team player who usually comes off the bench for the Islanders. Colin Clarke gave him a spot in the starting 11 last night and the young player made quite an impact on the game. Cabrero was all over the field yesterday and proved to be a key player in many of the Islanders’ goal opportunities. It was very encouraging to see the young Puerto Rican start get some more playing minutes and his impresive performance on the pitch. Definitley a player to keep an eye out for the rest of the season.

Friday games

Montreal-Miami: Miami managed to get their second win of the season beating Montreal 2-1 in Miamia’s new home stadium. The Impact missed an important penalty kick in the 58th minute. Miami received the Rochester Rhinos tomorrow for their 3rd game of the season. More on the match here.

Minnesota-Carolina: The Minnesota Thunder are still looking for their first win of the season as they tied 1-1 at Charleston. The Battery would’ve had yet another scoreless match if not for a penalty kick in the 38th minute that Tsuyoshi Yoshitake managed to convert into a goal.  More on the match here.

Saturday friendly

Today at 10:30 am, the Islanders played a friendly against the Puerto Rico Soccer League side Guaynabo Fluminense. As expected, the Islanders dominated the entirety of the match. Guaynabo, is currently in its pre-season preparation for the second season of the Puerto Rico Soccer League. Final score: PR Islanders (6-0) Guaynabo Fluminense

Match Report: Islanders vs Rhinos

April 25, 2009

Scoreless draw in Bayamon

09-04-24-islanders-rochester-scoreboard

In what turned out to be a disappointing match, the Puerto Rico Islanders played the Rochester Rhinos to a scoreless draw at Juan Ramon Loubriel stadium in Bayamon. The more than 4,ooo fans that turned out for the game saw several close opportunities for goal, but unfortunately the Islanders could only manage to get 1 point out of the match.

Statistically it was a pretty even match, 8 saves for both sides and 11 or 12 shots, but the Islanders did establish a more serious presence on the field. If not for some very good saves from the Rochester goalkeeper, as well as some lackluster finishing on the goal attempts – the Islanders would have won the match.

Rochester for the most part was content with defending and waiting for the chances to counter-attack while the Islanders came out with a very clear offensive formation. About 20 minutes into the game, the Islanders attack seemed to subside a bit and this allowed the Rhinos to take several dangerous shots. Thankfully, Islanders goalkeeper Bill Gaudette made his usual impressive saves to keep the visiting side off the score sheet. The Islanders regained their momentum and continued their constant attack in the Rochester area. The Islanders closed the first half with a bit of frustration and no clear idea on how to make the match go their way.

The second half saw a much reinvigorated Islanders team that managed to get close to scoring several times but to no avail. As the minutes continued to pass, the Rhinos got more and more physical while the refereeing continued to be inconsistent. 3 yellow cards were issued in less than ten minutes during the second half, but the referee still managed to not call some of the most serious examples of unfair play. A particularly bad non-call came in the last ten minutes when Nicholas Addlery was brought down inside the penalty area with no reactiong from the referee. The Islanders continued to pressure the visiting side but the match would finish scoreless, much to the dismay of the Puerto Rico fans.

On the refereeing:

It is unfortunate that we have to write about the refereeing in the USL yet again. Admittedly, it’s not easy to judge very effectively the officiating from the match from the USLLive video stream. Fortunately, we hear from several fans who witnessed the game and who can expand on what we saw over the internet. While the refereeing didn’t seem to affect the score directly (as it almost did in last night’s match between Miami and Montréal), it did allow for a very unsporting atmosphere during the game. There we many examples of very rough play, particularly (but not exclusively) on Rochester’s part that did not get called at all. The yellow cards came out when the situation seemed too obvious to ignore.

In the Miami-Montreal game the referee almost managed to negatively impact (no pun intended) the game when he called a nonexistent handball. Luckily for Miami, their goalkeeper managed to prevent the penalty kick from reaching the back of the net.

Again, we must certainly urge the USL to take a serious look at its officiating and how it might be negatively affecting the league. Even though the USL-1 is technically the second tier of US soccer, there is no reason or excuse to have sub-par officiating.

Matchups:

>The week of course started on Tuesday with the Vancouver Whitecaps visiting the expansion side Austin Aztex. Vancouver was coming from a 2-1 loss to Puerto Rico on the road. The Whitecaps managed to come out with a 1-1 draw in Austin for a total of 2 points in 3 matches (0-2-1). The Aztex (0-2-0) are still looking for their first win of their history in the league as they also finished with a 1-1 draw last week in their inaugural game versus Minnesota.

_____

>Rochester Rhinos at Puerto Rico Islanders:

You can find our detailed match preview here: Preview

_____

>Minnesota Thunder at Charleston Battery:

Minnesota and Charleston have both had unimpressive starts to the season. The Thunder will be on the road for the third consecutive game; they lost 2-1 to Carolina and then drew 1-1 last week with Austin. Minnesota is really in need of a win on the road, as they will be once again playing as visitors next week when they visit the RailHawks for the second time this month. On the other side, the Battery have yet to score a single goal this season – with two scoreless ties in the past 2 weeks, one on the road visiting Vancouver and a second one at home last week when they played the Impact. This will certainly be a very contested match, with both teams looking for their first win of the season.

_____

>Montreal Impact at Miami FC Blues:

The Impact will again be on the road for their second match of the season. Last week they tied 0-0 with Charleston, while Miami began with a 3-1 win over expansion team Cleveland City Stars – an impressive showing that earned Miami player Diego Serna the spot of USL player of the week. With the financial troubles Miami had in the off-season, as well as losing many of their top players, there was uncertainty as to how successful the team could be this season. Last week’s win for the Blues drew some attention and it will certainly be interesting to see how well they fare against the Impact. Also, this match marks the return of USL to Fox Soccer Channel (for the eight consecutive season) – kickoff is at 8:00pm and as was the case last season, matches shown on FSC will not be available through USL Live.

_____

>Cleveland City Stars at Austin Aztex

A battle of the two newest teams – Cleveland vs Austin. There will certainly be some excitement around this match as it’s the first time these two new USL-1 teams face against each other. To make matters more interesting, both teams are also looking for their first win of the season, and of course their first in the USL-1. This will be the third match for the Aztex (all of which have been at home) and the second one for the City Stars (both on the road). It’s hard to pick a favorite here as the teams are relatively unknown. While Cleveland comes from being USL-2 Champions last season, most of their squad is new – including their coach. It should be an interesting game to watch.

_____

>Portland Timbers at Vancouver Whitecaps

These two regional rivals face off under vastly different circumstances. The Timbers will play on the road for their season opener while Vancouver is still looking for its first win of the season. Last year’s champions, the Whitecaps, have had an unimpressive start and it will be interesting to see what they manage to do at home. On the other side, the Timbers are a big question mark. They finished dead last in the 2008 season and there’s a lot of uncertainty as to what they will be able to accomplish this season. Also keep in mind that Portland has yet to win a title in its 8 seasons in the USL and the fans are clamoring for a championship before the team makes the jump to the MLS in 2011.

_____

>Minnesota Thunder at Carolina RailHawks

Minnesota’s fourth game (all on the road) and the Thunder are still looking for their first win of the season. Minnesota had tied its last two games. Interestingly enough, these two teams met just 2 weeks ago for their season openers in which Minnesota fell 2-1 to Carolina. It will be tough for Minnesota to come out with a win, as they’ll only have one day in between games – traveling from Charleston where they tied 1-1 on Friday night. The RailHawks, having won both their matches so far this season, are certainly a team to watch this season. They missed the playoffs last season but have made some improvements in the off-season, starting with their head coach, ex Cleveland coach and two time USL-2 coach of the year Martin Rennie. The Thunder should be happy if they come out of Carolina with a tie.

_____

>Rochester Rhinos at Miami FC Blues

The Rhinos will be visiting Miami with just a day’s rest after their 0-0 in Puerto Rico. Rochester has yet to score a goal this season while Miami has played very well in their first two games, including a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact on Friday. Judging from how these teams have been playing so far, it will be difficult for Rochester to beat Miami on the road. It will be interesting to see how Miami continues to play, especially after the team almost folded during the off-season due to financial troubles.

MLS-Talk: Does USL-1 Need a Salary Cap?

April 23, 2009

Today, Kartik Krishnaiyer from MLS-Talk published an opinion piece regarding league parity in the USL-1. His main argument is that some USL-1 teams, the Islanders in particular, have opened up a ‘talent gap’ that is unhealthy for the league according to Krishnaiyer.

The commentator would have the USL look more like the MLS, to ensure “parity” – which would mean more centralized league control, salary caps, amongst other things. The point the author is missing is that all of those things are what many believe are driving MLS to the ground while the USL continues to flourish. While the MLS sides have an enormous advantage in terms of funds, most MLS clubs are not profitable while USL teams are quite successful in their markets.

MLS places much energy and effort into achieving league “parity” by having centralized control. This hampers the MLS clubs from pursuing the players and rosters they would like to sign, as the league prevents them from doing so. On the other hand, the USL-1 has no salary caps or limits in this regards. In theory, if the Islanders had the money and influence to buy players such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Drogba, Messi, etc they could so so. What Krishnaiyer fails to address in his piece is that while this is possible, it is extremely unlikely. The USL-1 teams self-limit themselves by virtue of how much they coudl actually earn as an USL side in their respective markets. Why would the Islanders pay 20,30,40 million dollars for a star filled roster if they could never hope to bring in the revenue needed to be profitable?

The fact is that USL-1 sides are limited by the revenue they could bring in, and this regulates the league naturally. If a particular team reached a certain point of profitability, it would probably try to move to the MLS – as it could probably bring in more revenue.

Finally, why should the USL try to achieve parity in its league? To support the lower rung teams? In the USL, any team can become a serious contender with adequate team organization. The league’s system will naturally weed out teams that are not competitive and profitable – while bringing in teams that try to be more competitive and successful; is this a bad thing? Probably not, trying to change how the whole league operates just to benefit some shaky teams would just bring down the value and standard of the league as a whole. Instead, the USL allows for the teams to constantly battle it out and attempt to improve themselves in a fairly even playing field.

It is our opinion that the USL represents a much higher quality league system and one that is more prone to survival and succes in the long run.
