Match preview: Islanders at Baltimore

April 24, 2010

The first Islanders game on the road for 2010 is also the first time the Puerto Rican club meets the newcomer Crystal Palace Baltimore. Baltimore lost their season opener 1-0 at home against the visiting Tampa Bay.

It will be an interesting match to watch but certainly hard to predict. Baltimore will be looking to score for their home crowd as well as for their first win of the season. On paper, the Islanders come in as favorites but with a new squad that has yet to play away from home together – anything can happen.

Coach Clarke has been moving the team in a positive direction and will probably field a squad pretty similar to the one that started on Wednesday.

Prediction: Islanders wins 2-0.

Brief preview: PR Islanders vs NSC Minnesota

April 21, 2010

For the 2010 season we will continue posting our match previews before each game (time permitting). Tonight’s season opener though is quite an interesting match to try and preview. On one hand, the Islanders haven’t had much of a pre-season and there really hasn’t been much communication roster-wise from the club’s front office. Then on the other, we have a Minnesota team in it’s first season.

Minnesota so far has played 2 games (both away) where they lost one to Vancouver (2-0) and won one against the Railhawks (1-0). Puerto Rico hasn’t played any DivII matches but won decisively in their Caribbean club competition match-up. With several key players back for the 2010 season (such as Delgado, Gaudette, Velez), and playing at home – the odds are that the Islanders will win their season opener tonight.

I would expect something around a 3-1 score – but then again, no one is quite sure yet what to expect of this 2010 version of the Islanders.

The last hurrah – Islanders vs Columbus Crew

October 20, 2009

IMG_0430

Tonight at 8pm, the Puerto Rico Islanders will face the Columbus Crew in their last game of the year. While the Islanders are out of the CONCACF Champions League (CCL), the Crew needs at least a tie to advance to the CCL quarterfinals. Beyond playing kingmakers, the Islanders also go into this match attempting to finish the year on a positive note after a disappointing season.

In the first match between these two teams in Columbus, the Crew proved adept at shutting down the Islanders and effectively defending against the team’s usually strong set pieces. The current MLS champions will probably look to score early in the match and then play a bit more conservatively against an Islanders team that is traditionally stronger at home.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to judge what kind of team we will see on the field tonight. Sandy Gbandi is still out, Marcelin and Noel have left the team as their contracts expired, and star goalkeeper Bill Gaudette is questionable for the match. Gaudette recently injured his left shoulder during a team practice and when we spoke with him yesterday his injury was still bothering him. With only one game in the season and without being able to train at all this week, it seems more likely than not that Gaudette will have to sit out this game.

USL-1 semifinals: Islanders vs Montreal, 1st leg preview

October 1, 2009

portorico08151

In a rematch of the 2007 USL-1 quartefinals, the Puerto Rico Islanders will face the Montreal Impact in this year’s playoffs – only this time around, the victor will earn a ticket to the USL-1 Finals.

Montreal has historically been one of the best teams in the USL-1, yet this season has been one of ups and downs for the Canadian club. The Impact began the season losing 7 of its first 8 matches, and later on had to deal with a mid season coach change and intra team fighting between players. Nevertheless, the Impact turned things around at the end of the season and first managed to get into the playoffs, and last week they pulled off an upset against a higher seeded Charleston Battery.

While Montreal has had this week to rest for their semifinal encounter, the Islanders had to get on a plane the day after they defeated Rochester 4-1 in Bayamon. Colin Clarke’s men had to travel on Monday to Mexico City for their Tuesday match against Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL). After that match, the got on a plane on Wednesday to travel to Montreal in order to play against the Impact tonight. With slim chances of advancing in the CCL – Clarke left some of his team in Puerto Rico in order to have them rested for tonight. Gaudette, Steele, Henry, Addlery, and Velez did not travel to Mexico and instead went straight to Montreal.

Match-preview: Islanders at Cruz Azul

September 29, 2009
(From Vidadeportes.com)

(From Vidadeportes.com)

Tonight, the Puerto Rico Islanders face against their Mexican rivals, Cruz Azul, in Mexico City. Puerto Rico needs a win if they hope to continue with any hopes of advancing into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League. With 10 points, Cruz Azul has already secured a spot in the quarterfinals – while the Islanders at the bottom of the group with only 2 points, now depend on winning and also some luck.

In the other group C match, Saprissa visits the Columbus Crew. If the Crew win against Saprissa, then the Islanders are eliminated from the competition as there would be no mathematical way for them to advance. But, if Saprissa wins or ties – then the Islanders need a win to take their hopes all the way to the last match day of CCL group action.

As the Islanders already know, winning in Mexico City is easier said than done. On a positive note, Cruz Azul has already qualified for the next round so the team will not approach this match with any sort of urgency. It’s expected that they actually field several bench players in tonight’s match. Unfortunately, the Islanders are also competing in the USL-1 playoffs. Having just secured a spot in the league’s semifinals – Puerto Rico must find a way to win tonight while at the same time considering tomorrow they have to fly all the way to Montreal in Canada for Thursday’s match, to then fly to Puerto Rico on Friday to close the series with the Impact on Sunday.

Brief preview: A must win watch in the USL, Islanders vs Rhinos

September 27, 2009

Just as we saw last year, the Puerto Rico Islanders need a comeback win in Bayamon to advance past the Rochester Rhinos in the USL-1 playoffs. Last year, the Islanders lost 2-0 in Rochester and later on won 3-0 in Puerto Rico to go onto their first ever USL-1 Final. This year, the task is a bit easier – the Islanders went down 2-1 in Rochester so they only need 1 goal to tie the global score and then 2 goals to win it outright in this quarterfinal showdown.

There’s not much else to say about the match. We’ve seen the team perform all year and know that the Tropa Naranja has what it takes to book a return ticket to the USL-1 Final. Before they can even think about going into the semi-finals – the Islanders will need to take care of the Rhinos tonight. A 1 goal disadvantage shouldn’t be hard for the Islanders to deal with, particularly at home. Unfortunately for Clarke’s men, Rochester had a better record this year on the road than at home. The Rhinos are also the only team in the USL to hold the Islanders scoreless in Bayamon. If Rochester managed to get another 0-0 tonight, the Islanders would be out of the playoffs.

With a visiting side that tends to play excessively physical and defensive, the key for the Islanders will be to attack hard from the opening whistle and rely on controlling posession and making smart offensive plays.

Prediction: It’s a hard one to call. One could very well go for a 2-0 win for the Islanders, but seeing how the team has made everything difficult for themselves this season – a 2-1 regular time score for the host, sending it to overtime and then a final 3-1 win seems very likely.

Match-preview: A must win for both teams, Islanders vs Saprissa

September 22, 2009

16118_saprissa-islanders

Tonight, the Puerto Rico Islanders host Costa Rican club Saprissa in what is surely a must win game for both teams. The Islanders and Saprissa currently have 1 point and 3 points respectively – making them the bottom 2 teams in their group. With only the top 2 teams advancing to the quarterfinals, both the Islanders and Saprissa are currently on the outside looking in.

The last time these teams met, the Islanders opened the scoring on a goal by Domenic Mediate but then were unable to respond to Saprissa’s 3 successive goals that gave a 3-1 victory to the Costa Rican hosts. For that match, the Islanders’ star goalkeeper Bill ‘The Wall’ Gaudette was unavailable due to accumulation of yellow cards. This time around, the Islanders will have team captain Noah Delgado unavailable due to yellow card accumulation, as well as still missing Jagdeosingh, Mediate, Behonick, and Gbandi due to injuries. On the visiting side, Saprissa will miss players Walter Centeno (yellow card accumulation), Alonso Solís, and the injured César Elizondo and Fausto González.

While Saprissa comes in with a must-win attitude, Colin Clarke’s objectives for tonight were the center of some speculation throughout the week. Essentially it all comes down to intentions and possibilities. With only 3 more games left in the group and 1 point accumulated, Puerto Rico at this point must win all remaining matches and also have some luck in regards to the results of other teams if the Islanders are to advance. On the other hand, the Islanders also begin the USL-1 playoffs with a trip to Rochester this Thursday.

Match-preview: Islanders vs Miami FC

September 19, 2009

IMG_8997

The Islanders travel to Miami for their last game of the regular season tonight at 8pm. While Miami is already out of the playoffs, the Islanders need to win this match to secure the 3rd spot on the table. At the moment, both Charleston and the Islanders are tied at 50 points with 1 match left to play. Due to tie breaking rules, the Islanders would secure the 3rd spot in the league even if Charleston also won and reached 53 points.

Puerto Rico comes from a tough couple of weeks in their schedule. Last week they had 4 matches in 6 days and in 3 different cities. With matches in both the USL and the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL), the team has struggled with injuries as well as  fatigue. Of their last 5 league matches, the Islanders won 3 (all at home) and then lost their last 2 matches (on the road). During their last 2 matches on the road, they were outscored 7-2. Losing those last 2 matches put the Islanders out of contention for the first 2 spots. With only tonight’s match left, the Islanders need a win to finish the regular season in 3rd place.

While at times Miami FC showed some signs of life during the season, 2009 has been the worst year so far for this young club. Just a few weeks ago it still looked as if Miami could make a push for the playoffs but then, last month, the Blues had their worst game ever where they lost 9-0 against the RailHawks. With only 6 games left in the season after that, Miami found it hard to recover – recording 1 win, 3 losses, and 1 tie in their next 5 matches. Already out of the playoff picture, Miami doesn’t have much else to play for beyond saving face and to gain some momentum for next season.

The Islanders come in to the match as clear favorites. These teams have already met twice before this season, once a 0-0 tie in Miami and also a 4-0 win for the Islanders in Bayamon. The Islanders will surely go out with all the team’s heavy hitters to secure the 3rd place en route to the playoffs and also to build some morale and momentum for the upcoming CCL match against Saprissa on Tuesday.

What to expect: Noel and Addlery up front, Cabrero and Alexis probably getting some playing time, some early substitutions if the score is on Puerto Rico’s side

Prediction: To err on the conservative side of things, 3-1 Islanders

Brief preview: Do or die time against Cruz Azul

September 15, 2009

2ezjt5e

Tonight’s match between the Islanders and Mexico’s Cruz Azul, more than being a great opportunity for some revenge, might very well be the match that defines the Islanders’ fortunes in the CONCACAF Champions League’s (CCL) group stage.

It’s revenge because just a few months ago Cruz Azul edged the Islanders via a penalty shootout and denied Puerto Rico a spot in the first CCL. Last time, the Islanders were riding high as the competition’s cinderella story – this time around, they’re the only team without a win in their group.

As we discussed with coach Colin Clarke in Columbus right before the team’s first CCL group stage match – the Islanders have a big disadvantage in being the only team in the group having to play their first 2 matches on the road. Last year, the Islanders had their first 2 on at home and were able to build upon the success of those wins. Now, the team needs to shake off their 2 losses in the group and also their 2 recent losses in the USL.

To make things even more challenging, the team will be playing after their most challenging week yet (4 matches in 6 days) and also have to deal with several key injuries. Star GK Gaudette is recovering from a minor injury – while he will play tonight, there’s no word on whether he’s 100% or not. Also, key midfielder Sandy Gbandi is out for the rest of the season, as well as Domenic Mediate. Jagdeosingh, the forward who scored the goal against Toronto that got the Islanders through the preliminary stage will also be unavailable. Steele, another key player is also questionable for tonight.

On the other side of things, Cruz Azul will present an even more challenging rival this time around. While last year they were struggling in their domestic competition, this season they are on of the best teams in the Mexican league.

The bottom line:

Having 2 losses and 0 points in the group stage so far – the Islanders need to win tonight. There’s no other option. If the Islanders don’t win tonight, it’s highly unlikely they will advance into the CCL quarterfinals. Beyond that, the team’s honor is on the line as the wounds from the CCL semi-finals are still fresh. The pressure is on and everything is on the line – Clarke and the ‘Tropa Naranja’ need to come up big tonight.

Match preview: Islanders vs RailHawks – a battle for the 2nd spot

September 8, 2009

6GXGVIQV

Less than 48 hours after playing against Rochester, the Islanders take to the Juan Ramon Loubriel field for the last time in the USL regular season of 2009 when they host the Carolina RailHawks tonight at 8:00pm.

The RailHawks and the Islanders will be fighting for the 2nd place in the USL-1 table. Currently, the RailHawks sit in 2nd place with 49 points and 27 matches played while the Islanders are in 3rd place with 47 points and 26 matches played. A win tonight for the Islanders would be important in securing the second spot for now and also to continue in the hunt for the first spot. Repeating as regular season winners is still possible yet unlikely as Portland sits comfortably at the top with 55 points. Even if the Islanders were to win tonight it would still mean the Islanders would have 50 points to Portland’s 55.

Realistically it looks as of the best the Islanders can aspire to is second place as Puerto Rico finished their last 3 matches on the road while Portland will be comfortably closing their last 3 at home against Austin and Cleveland (twice) – the two worst teams in the league this season.
