Brief preview: Islanders host the Rhinos

September 6, 2009

In their next-to-last match at home this season, the Puerto Rico Islanders host the Rochester Rhinos.

The Islanders continue in the race for the top spots in the league, currently in 4th place, but only 8 points behind first place Portland – and with a game in hand. Rochester travels to Bayamon with the proud accomplishment of breaking Portland’s USL-1 record undefeated streak of 24 matches when they defeated the Timbers at home in Portland.

The Islanders and the Rhinos have battled each other to a stand still this season, meeting twice before with both games ending in 0-0 draws – once in Bayamon and once in Rochester. Of the 5 matches left on the Islanders’ schedule this season, this could very well be the most complicated. Both the Islanders and Rochester are fighting for better spots in the USL table which means a better seed for the playoffs. The Islanders are still looking to end up in the top 2 spots while Rochester has a good chance at 5th.

Brief preview: Islanders host the Minnesota Thunder

August 29, 2009

pr-082609-preview

The Islanders return to USL-1 action tonight when they host the Minnesota Thunder.

Puerto Rico is clearly the favorite team here as they’re facing a team that is averaging less than a point a game and have only managed 5 wins all season. Minnesota is still technically in the playoff race, 8 points behind the 7th place Vancouver Whitecaps. While it’s highly unlikely the Thunder will make the playoffs, they certainly can’t afford to lose tonight if they expect to keep their hopes alive.

The Islanders on the other hand, are pretty much assured a playoff spot at this point. The team will be looking to continue getting 3 points per game in order to place as high as possible on the table and earn a higher seed going into the playoffs. Colin Clarke’s men sit in 4th place with 1 game in hand vs 1st place Portland and 2nd place Caroline, and 2 games in hand vs 3rd place Charleston. If Puerto Rico continue to win, they still have a very good shot at 2nd place in the table. While 1st place is still mathematically possible, seeing how well Portland has been playing – it is highly unlikely the Timbers will give up that spot with just a few games remaining in the season.

Match-preview: Do or die time in Costa Rica – Islanders vs Saprissa

August 25, 2009
Saprissa Stadium

Saprissa Stadium

5 games left in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) group stage for the Islanders. That’s 15 possible points with two extremely hard matches on the road to go. Having lost their first match last week in Columbus, tonight’s game against Saprissa could very well end up deciding whether or not the Islanders advance.

Every team in this group is experienced, strong, and tough at home. The tickets to the quarterfinals will probably go to those teams that can get good results on the road. Last week, as was expected by most, the home teams won comfortably. Puerto Rico went down 2-0 in Columbus and Saprissa also lost 2-0 in Mexico City. Now, these two teams meet in a match that is crucial for both sides. Neither team wants to claim the bottom of the table with a second straight loss.

If the Islanders are to advance, they probably need to win or at least tie against Saprissa. The best chance to steal some points on the road was probably last week when Puerto Rico faced the Crew. Leaving that game in the past, it’s now time for the Islanders to try to gain some momentum in the CCL. With the only remaining road match after this to be against Cruz Azul in Mexico City – it’s clear that tonight’s match is the best opportunity for the Islanders to move in the right direction. There is a good chance that losing in Costa Rica means the Islanders wouldn’t be able to advance out of the group stage. Because of this, it is a do or die match.

Match preview: Montreal Impact vs PR Islanders

August 15, 2009

portorico0815

The Puerto Rico Islanders continue their battle for the top spot in the USL-1 this week when they receive the Montreal Impact. The Islanders are currently red hot in terms of confidence, while Montreal continues to tumble through a very disappointing season. Still, both teams are in need of a victory. Puerto Rico is still in the race for first spot in the USL-1, while Montreal sits in 6th place with both Miami and Vancouver just 1 point behind – which means their playoffs spot is anything but assured.

The Impact come into this match having lost against Portland on Wednesday l-nil. Since July, Montreal has only managed 2 wins in their last 8 matches – and those wins came against Cleveland and Minnesota, 2 of the worst teams this season. On top of this, other than the two new expansion teams, Montreal is tied with Vancouver at 17 for most goals allowed on the road. They have struggled throughout the season and remain mediocre at best. Having lost twice already to Puerto Rico this season (3-2 in Bayamon, and 1-0 in Montreal), it’s difficult to see the Impact coming out with a win.

After the exciting CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) preliminary series against Toronto FC – the Puerto Rico Islanders return tonight to USL-1 league action when they host Miami FC Blues at 8:00pm in Bayamon.

For the Islanders, this is their first USL-1 match at home since June 20th – 8 league matches ago. During that long road-stretch, the Islanders went for 2 wins, 2 losses, and 4 ties (10 points out of 24 possible). Puerto Rico now sits in 4th place with 35 points, 6 points behind 1st place Charleston. To make things even harder for the Islanders, Portland and Carolina are both ahead by 4 points with a total of 39 but they have 2 games in hand – meaning they could conceivably move up by 10 points.

Champions League time: PR Islanders vs Toronto FC match-preview

July 29, 2009

islanders-vs-torontofc

If you’re a longtime Islanders fan like me – this post needs no introduction. You’ve had this date marked on the calendar for a while now, you’ve run all kinds of scenarios in your head, and today you’ve barely been able to concentrate on anything else. Yes, it’s time for the Puerto Rico Islanders to begin once more their campaign in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL).

The USL-1 darling team that was within an inch of last year’s CCL Final is back for more. Before the Islanders can make it into the group stage (into what is surely the most difficult group this year), they have to once again go through the motions of the preliminary round. In last year’s competition, the Islanders faced-off against Costa Rican giants L.D. Alajuelense in a very surprising and last minute win for the Puerto Rico club. This year, the men in orange travel to the north to face MLS club Toronto FC – the current club of ex-Islanders captain Marco Velez.

Match-preview: Islanders vs Whitecaps

Last year’s USL-1 Final teams go at it again tonight when the Puerto Rico Islanders visit the current champions, Vancouver Whitecaps.

Puerto Rico plays the last USL match in a series of 8 straight road games. The Islanders had an important tie against Portland on Thursday and sit at the top of the USL table in a 3-way tie with Portland and Charleston. Vancouver comes into the match sitting in 8th place , on the outside of the playoffs spots but certainly looking to secure one. The Whitecaps have had a disappointing season, but can still salvage it by making the playoffs; and they certainly have a chance, while teams like Puerto Rico and Charleston have played 21 and 20 matches respectively – Vancouver has only played 15 (just half the 30 season games).

Battle for first place: PR Islanders vs Portland Timbers match preview

Time to cut down some trees

Time to cut down some trees

The Puerto Rico Islanders take on the Portland Timbers in what will probably be their most difficult test this season.

The Islanders play in Portland for their seventh consecutive game on the road against a Timbers side that is riding a 16 games undefeated steak and that hasn’t lost at home so far this season. Let’s be very clear about this – the match tonight will be very tough and a positive result is crucial if the Islanders are to make a run for first place when the season ends. While it’s pretty much assured Puerto Rico will be in the playoffs – first place at the end of the regular season is more than just the Commissioners Cup trophy, it also represents getting a ‘bye’ to the next round of the post-season. Considering that the Islanders have a decent chance of passing to the group stages of the CONCACAF Champions League – going straight to the USL-1 semi-finals and bypassing the quarter-finals will be very welcome to ease fixture congestion.

Match-preview: Montreal vs Puerto Rico

July 19, 2009

The Puerto Rico Islanders visit Montreal today at 3:45pm for a match that is hard to predict. Both these teams have gone scoreless in their last 3 games. Fortunately, the Islanders have managed to get draws but Montreal has lost 2 of these last 3.

Another important factor to consider is that Montreal is really struggling this season. They look like a team fraught with insecurity and little chemistry. Just this week they had an in-game fight between two players and then their coach Dos Santos being ejected from their last game for attacking a Rochester player.

The Puerto Rico players have had a few days to rest and work on team cohesion. The coaching staff took them this week to the Niagara Falls and gave them some down time before heading to Montreal. Hopefully this will have some effect on the scoring drought the team is going through. With 2 tough games next weekend in Portland and Vancouver, coach Clarke needs to steer the ship in the right direction soon – particularly as they fly from coast to coast and back in just 2 weeks and with the CONCACAF Champions League match-up against Toronto FC on July 29th.

Match Preview: PR Islanders at Rochester Rhinos

July 10, 2009

usl-fnf-071009

The Islanders hit the mid-way point of their away-game stretch of 8 straight matches on the road. The game tonight against Rochester marks the 4th straight game on the road for the Islanders who have had 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie in their previous 3 matches.

Rochester currently sits in 5th place in the USL-1 table with 23 points after 14 games played. They have won 3 straight league matches after going down 3-nil against Cleveland back in June 13th. The Rhinos have also been playing well in the US Open Cup, defeating USL-2 side Wilmington to head to the Open Cup semi-finals.
