Match report: Islanders vs Minnesota 3-1

April 24, 2010

Last Wednesday night the Puerto Rico Islanders started their season with a bang by downing the visiting Minnesota stars 3-1. There’s not much to say on the match as a whole other than it was a great way to kick things off.

It’s evident that the team has many new faces as the squad on the field went through ups and downs in terms of how they gelled together. Surprisingly, Minnesota dominated (slightly) possession while the Islanders’ midfield at time looked very disorganized.

The defense did their job quite well and coach Clarke gave the fans what they wanted, an offensive minded team.

Still, there will be questions surrounding the team until they come out victorious against some of the top clubs in the league.

PR Islanders into the CFU Club Championship semifinals

April 21, 2010

We kick-off the 2010 Islanders season with an article by a new contributor, Angel Marrero. Angel is a longtime Islanders fan and can often be found live tweeting Islanders matches here: @amarrero , today he writes about his observations from the Islanders’ series in CFU (Caribbean Football Union) competition vs Haiti’s Racing des Gonaives.

Question: If the PR Islanders are off to a flying start and (practically) nobody is there to see it, does it make it exciting?

Answer: If you ask the 200-300 people at JRL, then yes!
This past week, the PR Islanders finally started their 2010 champions with a pair of victories over Racing des Gonaives of Haiti in the Second Round of the CFU Club Championship.  The first game this past Friday was won 2-0 with goals from Sandy Gbandi and David Foley.  The second game this past Sunday was won 3-0 with two goals from Joshua Hansen and another by Foley.  And while the victories were great, it was the manner in which the won that was the most important part.

In a phrase: “Organization will set you free!”  Well, it’s either that or Colin Clarke finally decided that the best defense was a good offense…
The Islanders were on the attack for most of the match even when they were down to 10 men due to a red card handed to Osei Telesford for a body check worthy of play-off hockey (probably in retaliation for Racing’s failure to stop play when an Islanders player was down with an injury).  The midfield controlled most of the game with crisp passing, good spacing and overlapping plays and decent set plays.  Foley, Hansen and Alexis Rivera were fairly rampant on the attack and Gbandi had a goal worthy of SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.  The new arrivals Joe Salem, Junior Sandoval, Shaka Bangura are a welcome additions to a midfield that was lacking both creativity and control of possession.  The Islanders were much more reliant on passing into space to create shoot opportunities and less on the long-ball tactics of previous years.

And on defense, the Islanders were much more disciplined than on previous years.  Gone was the over-chasing that was characteristic that that prevalent last season.  Instead, the Islanders were able to pressure Racing’s players without losing their shape or leaving gaps that they could exploit.  The back line, especially Marco Velez, were able to clear out practically all of Racing’s attacks, forcing them to shoot from outside the box.  And when the back line did make mistakes (only a couple in both games), Gaudette was his old impenetrable self, preventing two clear goal-scoring opportunities.

A disappointing end: Islanders edged out of USL-1 playoffs by Montreal Impact

October 6, 2009

Islanders vs Montreal 2LM

After a couple of days of reflection, it’s time for some sober thoughts on the disappointing end to the Puerto Rico Islanders’ 2009 season.

The Islanders came into the match a goal down after losing 2-1 in Montreal last Thursday. To advance to the USL-1 Finals, the Islanders needed to win by 2 goals or at least tie it with 1 goal and send it into overtime. Instead of winning, Puerto Rico lost 2-1 (4-2 aggregate) in Bayamon against Montreal to end their USL-1 season earlier than anticipated.

Colin Clarke’s men came out looking show once again their usual dominance at home, but instead found themselves 2 goals down just 2 minutes of play on Sunday. A confusing play where Islanders’ defender Henry was fouled twice led to a save by Gaudette that found its way to the feet of an Impact player who managed to make it 1-0 in the opening minutes. The second shot was so awkward and strange that Scott Jones couldn’t manage to properly deflect it out as the team took an unexpected early hit.

While the fouls that took Henry down should have been called, thus preventing the confusion that in part led to the goal – the Islanders still had 88 minutes to mount a come back. Yet the same team that defeated Rochester 4-1 during the quarterfinals couldn’t manage a single goal against Montreal until the last few minutes of play; and then only via a penalty shot.

The Islanders return to the USL-1 semifinals

With a final score of 4-1, the Puerto Rico Islanders were no match for the visiting Rochester Rhinos in the second leg of this USL-1 quarterfinal series. After going down 2-1 in Rochester on Thursday, the Islanders ultimately advances via a 5-3 aggregate score.

While the Islanders found it difficult to come back from an early Cristian Arrieta red card in Rochester, the Rhinos never seemed to be contenders in last night’s match. As fate would have it, the Rhinos would also face a red card in Bayamon – something that made it even more difficult for the Rochester team to put up much of a fight.

Clarke’s men presented an ideal mix of relentless attack with a strong defensive line in the back and active possession in the midfield. Noel and Addlery proved to be a deadly combination with 2 goals a piece during last night’s match.

With this win, Clarke and the Islanders return to the USL-1 semifinals for the 3rd straight year and will face the Montreal Impact.

Match-preview: Islanders vs Rochester Rhinos

September 24, 2009

po-092109-sched

The USL-1 playoffs start tonight when the Rochester Rhinos host the Puerto Rico Islanders in a rematch of last season’s semi-final series between these two teams. Last year, Rochester won 2-0 at home and looked ready to advance to the USL-1 Final before the Islanders won 3-0 in Bayamon. So far this year, the Rhinos have been one of the toughest opponents for Puerto Rico – having drawn twice at 0-0. The Islanders hold this year’s regular season series against the Rhinos via a 2-0 win recently in Bayamon.

Rochester will not be able to count on Johnny Menyongar, their Liberian star scorer, while ex-Islanders player Tai Atieno is questionable for tonight. For the Islanders, the main obstacle will be fatigue after they played a grueling match in Bayamon on Tuesday against Saprissa. The Tropa Naranja then had to fly to Rochester yesterday (Wednesday) to play the Rhinos tonight. Needless to say, the Islanders’ squad has had little time to rest before this very important match.

When coming into the playoffs, one has to forget about regular season points and approach the competition with a clean slate. As such, the Islanders can’t rely on being the higher seeded team. The Rhinos are tough opponents and Colin Clarke sh0uld try to get as ample a lead as he can from Rochester tonight. This year, the Rhinos have played better on the road than at home – meaning that the Islanders can’t take for granted their superiority at home and need to come out with a win tonight.

With most starters playing the match against Saprissa, it’s tough to speculate with which players come out as starters tonight. Most of the decision will have to come from Clarke’s evaluation on each player’s conditions after traveling.

Prediction: Islanders win 2-1.

Match-report: Islanders vs Saprissa – Another heartbreak in Bayamon

For the second time in a row in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL), the Puerto Rico Islanders let a victory slip away in the final minutes of the game. The Islanders were up 1-0 against Saprissa when in the last play of the match, literally just seconds way from the end, Kendall Watson tied it at 1-1 for the Costa Rican club.

Right from the start of the match, it looked like the game would be a challenging one. Not only was Saprissa a tough opponent, but the turf of the Juan Ramon Loubriel was in terrible conditions after the torrential rains of the last couple of days. The field was soaked and muddied – something that made the match even more difficult for both sides. But if one team was more affected by the state of the field, it was the Islanders. While Puerto Rico has played in similar conditions in the past, the state of the field slowed down the tempo of the game. With an Islanders side that often wins due to physicality and speed, the wetness of the field made it difficult for the home side on several occasions.

Both sides required some time to get used to the playing conditions and how the ball would often get stuck in several pools of water across the field. Yet even with the turf in those conditions, the Islanders didn’t take long in establishing their dominance of the match. While Saprissa had some good attempts on goal – the Islanders were the most dangerous team on the field from start to finish. Unfortunately, the condition of the field often disrupted Islanders counter-attacks and plays – ultimately taking its toll on the team. Puerto Rico had many impressive plays and shot on goal, but Saprissa’s goalkeeper, Navas, consistently found a way to control the ball at the last second.

Brief update: Islanders tie again at home

September 22, 2009

With a heart breaking last minute goal by Saprissa (quite literally during the last minute of play), the Islanders let their almost 1-0 victory turn into another tie at home. Now, with only 2 points in their 4 CCL matches, the Islanders are virtually eliminated from advancing past the group stage.

Puerto Rico played the better game against Saprissa, but the heavy rains hurt the team as they missed several close chances on goal.

There is still a mathematical opportunity for the team to win, but it is highly unlikely.

More on this later…

Post-match: Islanders win 3-1 in Miami

September 19, 2009

The Islanders ended the USL-1 regular season on a positive note with a 3-1 win over hosts Miami FC. Colin Clarke’s men showed an organized and aggressive style throughout the match and it earned them an easy win. The lone goal for Miami was actually an own-goal scored by the Islanders’ Dan Gargan on a corner kick by the Blues.

With a goal by Addlery in the 1st minute of play, the Blues found it hard to come back and really threaten the Islanders. Even though the Islanders went ahead early in the match, Colin Clarke kept pushing the team to attack and increase the lead.

This victory secures the 3rd spot in the USL-1 regular season for the Islanders and the team will now face the Rochester Rhinos in the first round of the USL-1 playoffs.

Post-match: Elation and Agony in Bayamon – Islanders vs Cruz Azul

September 18, 2009
From PrimeraHora

From PrimeraHora

A match that started in dream-like fashion ended up in utter disappointment for Puerto Rico last Tuesday. Fans witnessed as the team allowed Cruz Azul to tie the game at 3-3 after the Islanders had been up 3-1 at the end of the first half. It was must win game for the Tropa Naranja, who now find themselves with little chance of advancing past the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL).

Going into Tuesday’s match, it was difficult to know what to expect. On one hand, the Islanders desperately needed a win to continue any realistic hopes of advancing past the group stage and the team still has a solid reputation of defending their home turf regardless of the opponent. Still, the team has been going through a tough month of injuries and a grueling schedule. While Cruz Azul has been playing well in their domestic league, they were under no pressure of coming out with a win (having won their first 2 CCL matches) – something demonstrated by their initial lineup and the fact that they left a few starters back in Mexico City.

With the atmosphere of a grudge match, the Islanders and Cruz Azul took to the field in Bayamon. It didn’t take long for the Islanders to show their dominance and rattle the visitors’ nerves with several close shots within the first 10 minutes. Clarke’s men dominated possession and kept attacking the Cruz Azul net repeatedly. The first half ended with the Islanders ahead 3-1. It had been a magnificent display of futbol and what the team can do when playing at the top of their game.

Post-match: Islanders lose 2-1 against RailHawks

September 15, 2009

10327_569062128989_121801222_34043142_7323391_n

Carolina was able to exploit the visitor’s early defensive mistakes and defeat the visiting Islanders for the first time in team history via final score of 2-1. The Islanders allowed 2 goals in the first 10 minutes of the match and weren’t able to come back from their deficit against the RailHawks.

A injury stricken and fatigued Islanders side played their 4th match in 6 days on Saturday when they faced the RailHawks in Cary, NC. The team had just come from a 5-2 meltdown in Minnesota less than 48 hours earlier. According to the Islanders’ Alexis Rivera, one of the team’s main problems in that loss was the hit to their morale when they went down 2 goals to none early in the match. Unfortunately for them, they experienced the same thing against a tough RailHawks squad.

The match can be broken down simply in several key points:

-Just as they did in Minnesota, the Islanders allowed 2 early goals from defensive mistakes and looked demoralized for much of the first half.

-The players were clearly tired and weary from the 4 games and all the travel they had to do during the week.

-Normally, the team could have counted on several strong bench players to offset all the playing and traveling – but the Islanders were missing many players due to injury: Gaudette, Behonick, Telesford, Gbandi, Mediate, Villaroel, and Jagdeosingh.

-The RailHawks dominated the first half while the Islanders looked the better team throughout most of the second-half.

The positives:

-Myers seems to be a much better choice for backup goalkeeper to Gaudette than Behonick.

-Alexis Rivera continues to perform impressively in games where he is giving serious playing time. Rivera was one of the few consistent bright spots on the team.

-The team barely missed some shots during the second-half and showed they could get back into the match.

The bottom line:

The RailHawks played much better from the opening whistle and managed their first ever win over the Islanders. Puerto Rico seemed to struggle with a fatigued and injured squad but still managed to come close to tying the score towards the end of the match. Myers’ performance should add some confidence to the team when not having Gaudette available. But the main issue to be worked on now is to not allow early and easy goals.
