Post-match: Islanders fall in Minnesota

After playing on Tuesday night in Bayamon and flying to Minnesota to face the Thunder on Thursday, the Islanders couldn’t put up a fight and fell 5-2 to a team with one of the poorest records this season.

Without a doubt, the match against Minnesota was lost at the tactical level. The question is whether or not coach Clarke approached the match with the proper attitude.  With just 2 more matches left in the season, it was still important for the Islanders to earn a victory on the road.

Clarke threw together several players who haven’t been playing regular minutes into an unfamiliar formation. One motivation here seems to have been to rest most starters due to the grueling schedule the team is going through. But more importantly, it looks as if Clarke has his mind set on the crucial match next Tuesday against Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL).

Post-match: Islanders close at home with an important victory

September 8, 2009

On Tuesday night, the Puerto Rico Islanders played their last home match of the regular season. With a tough opponent in the Carolina RailHawks, the Islanders proved the better team and with the victory moved to the 2nd spot in the USL-1 table.

From the beginning, the match proved tough as both sides attempted to control the midfield and to pressure their opponent. Both goalkeepers proved crucial in keeping their sheets clean for the first half of the game. In particular, the RailHawks’ keeper made some last minute saves that kept the Islanders off the board until late in the second half.

After half time, both teams proved to be in active pursuit of the 3 points with constant back and forth action. At first it looked like the visitors would score first, but Gaudette made sure to keep them off the board and the Islanders retook control of the game early in the second half. Puerto Rico got closer and closer to scoring each time as they relentlessly attacked the Carolina net. Then in the 73rd minute, Josh Hansen was brought down in the penalty area by the Carolina goalkeeper. As usual, Cristian Arieta stepped up to take the penalty shot and scored the first goal of the night. The Islanders were winning 1-0 in the 75th minute.

Islanders down the Rhinos 2-0

September 8, 2009

With some tough physical play, the Islanders and the Rhinos faced-off Sunday night in Bayamon. The Islanders proved the better team on the field and came out with the 3 points via a 2-0 victory.

The first half proved relatively even, with the visiting time having the most chances but things turned around for Puerto Rico in the 30th minute. Henry took down MacFarlene in the penalty area in what should have been a red card, and the referee called for the penalty. Chris Nurse took the penalty shot but Islanders goalkeeper Bill ‘The Wall’ Gaudette came up big for the team yet again when he stopped the shot with his leg at the last possible moment.

Post-match: 3 points lost in Costa Rica – Islanders vs Saprissa

August 28, 2009

It started out promisingly but it ended in agony. The Islanders scored first in what ended up being a 3-1 defeat against Saprissa.

Puerto Rico began this game surprisingly well. While Mediate’s inclusion in the starting lineup was a reason of concern at first, he ended up being one of the best players on the field. The Islanders started by absorbing Saprissa’s pressure while at the same time making sure to control possession and attack when they could. While Colin Clarke’s men looked organized and in control, Saprissa looked like a team with very few ideas other than attempting long range shots.

With the Islanders controlling most of the midfield, Saprissa began to attempt to recover some of the ground in the center but would still have many gaps in the defense. Exploiting one such defensive gap, Domenic Mediate would receive a pass, break free of his defender and send a shot to the back of the net. To the surprise of many, the Islanders were ahead 1-0 in the 25th minute.

Post-match thoughts: Columbus Crew vs Puerto Rico Islanders

August 23, 2009

IMG_0430

After taking the time to let the match sink in, to watch the replays and whatnot – I guess it’s time for some sober thoughts on the Islanders’ loss at Columbus on Tuesday night.

The current MLS champions defended their home well and the 2-0 was a decisive victory for the home team. While the Islanders did not look like the better team, the Crew didn’t look like a much better team either. To me, the match in Toronto was much more one sided – where Puerto Rico continued to bunker in and absorb the TFC pressure. In Columbus, the Islanders actually looked at times like they could have taken the match directly to the Crew and come out victorious.

The first half ended in a deserved 0-0 score line. While the ball was mostly in the Crew’s possession, the Islanders were well organized in the defense and successfully absorbed the pressure with even a few chances at goal. Columbus also got close to scoring but couldn’t manage to get through the Puerto Rico defense.

Match-review: A disapointing victory?

August 15, 2009

An important victory, a disappointing match

With a 1-0 score, the Islanders were barely able to put Montreal away and gain 3 more points. Where many expected the Islanders to show off again, as they had last week against Miami, instead the team looked out of sync and barely able to keep Montreal from scoring.

Not only did the Islanders fail to really mount much of a threat, but they actually looked outclassed by Montreal for a long period during the first half of the match. For about the first 30 minutes, the Impact controlled possession and continually attacked Bill Gaudette’s net. Things changed when the Islanders managed to get a goal from a corner kick by Steele in the 37th minute. Steele sent in one of his classic corners, Arrieta headed it closer to to the goal, and Krause took care of sending it past Montreal’s keeper. Classic Islanders corner and a decisive one at that.

A great start to a tough couple of months – Islanders vs Miami post-match

With a resounding 4-0 score line, the Puerto Rico Islanders buried the visiting Miami FC in Bayamon on Saturday night. (In case you missed the goals, see the videos at the end of this article)

There is no question that the Islanders were a different team on the pitch last night than before the preliminary CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) series against Toronto FC. With much confidence and swagger, the Islanders proved not only which was the better team last night – but also that Puerto Rico has the talent and ability to play great futbol.

Both teams fielded squads that were looking for the 3 points, Miami in particular with just 3 defenders at the back seemed to be eschewing any sort of conservative play in favor of pressuring the Islanders and looking for a crucial win on the road. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Islanders found the confidence boost they needed in eliminating Toronto FC from CCL competition.

Match-review: Another Puerto Rico shut-out, Islanders eliminate Toronto from CCL

August 5, 2009
Toronto: 'I Am Your Father'!

Toronto: 'I Am Your Father'!

It wasn’t pretty but it was enough. With a 0-0 score in Bayamon, the Puerto Rico Islanders eliminated Canadian champion Toronto FC via a 1-0 aggregate score (home + away) and now advance to the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) group stages for a second year in a row.

Toronto FC came into this match needing a goal to at least take the match into overtime. Unfortunately for them, TFC was wasn’t very successful in breaking down the Islanders defense. While many expected the Islanders to bunker down again and wait for the counter-attack, Colin Clarke’s men actually controlled possession and were in the driving seat for the first half. Puerto Rico had a couple of good opportunities during the first 45 minutes but were unable to convert.

Golden victory in Toronto – Islanders CCL opening match

July 31, 2009
Can't hear you know Toronto

Can't hear you now Toronto

John Krause in the above picture says it all perfectly. After many in the Toronto and the Canadian media (and even more fans) belittled the Puerto Rico team – the Islanders showed them how costly that can be. With a golden 1-0 victory over Toronto FC at BMO Stadium, the Islanders are now in great position to advance to the group stages of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) when they face Toronto FC in Bayamon on Tuesday.

If you didn’t catch the game, you can see the highlights here:

or: see my previous post.

Well, what to say about the game? There’s not that much to be said that you haven’t probably already read in the media. I felt that I needed to take a step back, watch the game again, let it sink in, and then write about it. Certainly there were a lot of emotions going around in this game.

Match Report: Meltdown in Vancouver – Islanders vs Whitecaps; and extended commentary

July 26, 2009

Before digging in and reading this post about the horrendous match witnessed last night – take a couple of minutes to review the (painful) video highlights below:

As I mentioned briefly in my match-preview: this was going to be a tough match for several reasons:

-the last of 8 straight USL-1 matches on the road

-playing last week in Montreal, then traveling all the way to Portland for a Thursday match

-playing on Thursday in Portland, traveling to Vancouver Friday, playing Saturday

-having to rest players for the CONCACAF Champions League match on Wednesday (which means flying all the way back to eastern Canada)
